You can see the separations between the terrains. These create the cast shadows of course. The bottom terrains create the ground in proportionate distance.

We've tested this same scene for another effect as well. We moved the camera underneath the terrains and pointed it up. We then set the transparency of the maps to 85-95% to allow the light to illuminate the semitransparent leaves. Wherever the cast shadows fall on underlying leaves, the opacity multiplies as in nature.

Most intriguing are the possibilities involving volumetric lighting, creating visible rays of light seen penetrating the leaf canopies in a jungle mist.

Here's the tiling map. In this case, the 2D texture is mapped to the terrain models using a Parametric setting.
